As higher education contends with a decade of enrollment contraction, mission-driven clarity is emerging as a critical differentiator. That was the dominant undercurrent at the 2026 Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., where leaders from across the sector gathered not just to discuss survival, but to envision renewal.
This wasn’t a defensive retreat. It was a strategy session, one grounded in identity.
Mission as Operating System
At a time when many colleges are chasing enrollment through disconnected tactics, the ACCU gathering spotlighted institutions that are re-centering their operations around mission, not as a slogan, but as an organizing principle.
“It wasn’t just ‘let’s survive this year’, it was about how we lead with identity in a long-term way,” said Michael Cronin, VP of Partnerships at DegreeSight.
That shift matters. Because when institutions articulate why they exist, they make better decisions about what to sustain—and how to grow.
Leadership With Formation at the Center
Amid demographic decline and political polarization, Catholic colleges are embracing formation as a form of leadership: educating not just for careers, but for conscience.
“They’re not just educating for the labor market, they’re forming students to live meaningful lives. That resonated,” added Cody Bennett.
This broader framing of value is not limited to Catholic institutions, but it’s being modeled there with clarity and urgency.
Transfer as a Mission-Aligned Strategy
Enrollment strategy dominated conversations, but the tone was distinct. It wasn’t about quick wins, it was about coherence.
“People came by because we said the word ‘transfer.’ They’re trying to figure it out. It’s top of their list in 2026,” said Bennett.
More than a tactical opportunity, transfer emerged as a strategic litmus test: Can institutions serve non-traditional students without compromising identity? Or better yet, can they do it because of their identity?
Measurable Mission, Modern Tools
Sessions throughout the conference emphasized the intersection of faith, purpose, and measurable outcomes.
“The whole event was about how Catholic colleges can be sustainable by making mission measurable. That’s where we plug in,” Cronin explained.
DegreeSight’s role? Delivering clarity and speed in the transfer process, helping institutions reduce enrollment friction while reinforcing values. Catholic identity, in this framing, becomes a differentiator, not a constraint.
Purpose-Built Networks Are the Future
In a sector defined by fragmentation, ACCU offered something rare: community built around shared values. It’s not just about Catholic higher ed, it’s about showing how identity-based collaboration can drive sector-wide insights.
The takeaway is simple: In a time of change, clarity is strategy.
And clarity starts with mission.
