New Credit Equivalencies
UMass Amherst faced significant challenges in serving transfer students effectively. The university’s previous transfer tools failed to deliver the transparency and responsiveness that modern prospective students demand. Students often left the institution’s website frustrated, unable to get clear answers to a simple but critical question: “How will my credits transfer to UMass?” Additionally, UMass had a difficult experience with their previous vendor’s implementation process, which left them wary of adopting new systems without assurances of a smoother transition.
UMass addressed these issues by partnering with DegreeSight to deploy INBOUND, a comprehensive credit evaluation and management system. DegreeSight integrated INBOUND with UMass’s PeopleSoft system, enabling more accurate and scalable articulation of transfer credits. The implementation also included enabling DocSight, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) functionality, allowing prospective students to upload their coursework and transcripts easily and receive immediate, automated credit evaluations. This modernization provided prospective students with fast, personalized insights, while reducing the administrative burden on UMass staff.
DegreeSight worked alongside UMass Amherst to fundamentally transform their transfer evaluation infrastructure. The process began with a thorough integration of the INBOUND platform into PeopleSoft, ensuring that UMass could deliver real-time, student-facing credit evaluations through a seamless system. As part of this integration, DegreeSight enabled OCR technology to support automatic extraction of transcript data, allowing students to submit their academic histories digitally and instantly receive a preliminary evaluation of how their credits would transfer.
Beyond technology implementation, DegreeSight guided UMass through an extensive training and process optimization initiative. Staff across admissions, academic advising, and registrar offices received targeted instruction on how to leverage the new platform to its full potential. This training also helped establish new internal workflows for maintaining and expanding the equivalency database over time.
The collaborative effort between UMass and DegreeSight led to the rapid creation of more than 850,000 course equivalencies within the system, positioning UMass as a national leader in credit evaluation capacity. Furthermore, the institution developed over 1,200 new credit equivalencies in just the first five months after launch.
As the system began generating more than 145 transfer leads per month, UMass experienced an unprecedented surge in transfer interest and inquiry volume. This success story illustrates how strategic technology implementation, coupled with institutional commitment to process improvement, can transform transfer recruitment and support at scale.
